Bogong Wilderness Adventure

7 days - Albury to Albury

Enjoy a ride in the spectacular Australian High Country of North East Victoria. This High Country ride takes you on a journey through time, from the rich fertile Kiewa Valley and the 21st century, through the layers of vegetation from temperate rainforest, up rocky spur lines to the vast open High Plains and mountain peaks, unchanged since the 19th century. It combines great horses with the natural splendour of the Bogongs, a dramatic landscape rich in natural wonders and cultural heritage.

Organised rides have been conducted into the Bogongs for over 100 years. The early trips were provisioned and assisted by cattlemen, and were restricted to all-male parties, generally with a maximum of 25 members. Although the mode of transport employed is the same and the tracks and camps used are a continuation of that tradition, these days the rides are open to women as well as men and our forays into the wilderness are limited to just ten in the party. This ride offers a truly Australian experience, a tapestry of horses, campfires, history, yarns, nature, new friends and fun, woven into a stunning landscape.

You travel with packhorses, far from 4-wheel drive vehicles and crowds across a landscape dotted with old cattleman's huts, bushranger hideouts, brumby traps and goldmines. You will follow tracks that were cut into the mountainsides over 100 years ago in search of gold and cattle grazing or look for herds of wild horses. In January and December the ride is accompanied by master horseman, Wayne Banney and you will learn about horses, their behaviour and how you can benefit as a horse rider by following some Natural Horsemanship techniques.

Day 1
Transfer from Albury to Mountain Creek Motel, Tawanga. Overnight.
Day 2 (B,L,D)

You will be collected from the motel and transferred to Spring Spur Homestead at about 7.00am, for a farmhouse breakfast. Guests then spend the morning packing their gear, meeting their horse and guides, and have a briefing which includes some riding tuition and advice on minimum impact riding and other specific topics.

The tour departs about 12 noon for your first day's ride, which takes you along traditional stock routes, through the rich agricultural land of the upper Kiewa river valley. You stop for a packed lunch in the low forest country. The remainder of the days' ride is travelling along tracks through tall eucalyptus forest, featuring tree ferns, many small creeks, and views of the mountains above.

The first camp is typically at forest level by a creek or river, offering opportunities for trout fishing or swimming. Then its time for a campfire cooked meal, which may be BBQ, chicken stir-fry, pasta, roast beef or vegetarian choices.

Day 3 (B,L,D)
You begin with a campfire breakfast at about 7.00am, of muesli, fruit, wood smoked bacon, toast, tea and coffee. Break camp about 9.00am for the days' ride. Climb through the different vegetation types, along spur tracks, which take you up to the treeless high plains. The lunch camp will be beside a small stream, where a billy of tea is boiled, and you enjoy such delights as wood smoked meats, bread rolls, home cooked fruitcake and fresh fruit.

Alternatively, the day may find you following old mining tracks into remote mountain valleys, before climbing to the tops the next day. Camp tonight is typically under the stars, with newfound friends and stories to entertain you.

Day 4 (B,L,D)
Another camp breakfast in the clear mountain air as you prepare for a day of riding the High Plains the home of legendary horses and horsemen. You can travel all day across the plains to your next camp, enjoying the big sky and the vast rolling plains. Along the way you will see the old brumby traps, where the wild horses were caught, and occasionally you may glimpse wild brumby mobs racing across the skyline, or perhaps a flock of emu. The camp is high in the mountain air, far from the modern world, with a warm campfire, a hearty meal and the howl of distant dingoes.
Day 5 (B,L,D)
Today you climb a mountain! Scattered across the plains are rocky knobs and high points. Following old bridle tracks cut into the hillside, you climb to the summit. Beyond is the deep cut of a river valley, steep drops and rock faces, and as far as the eye can see - rolling blue mountains - range after range, Mt. Fainter, Mt. Feathertop and Mt. Bogong.

The camp tonight is on the edge of the plains at another old stock camp, with distant views, in a warm sheltered glade.

Day 6 (B,L,D)
Today you descend down into the valley. Following old stock, bridle and gold mining tracks, you climb down the rocky spurs, like staircases, through the snowgums, the tall forests, and finally reach the valley floor. The tour finishes at about 5.00pm at Spring Spur Homestead.

Transfer back to your motel for a chance to freshen up before returning to the homestead for a final dinner.

Day 7 (B)
Transfer back to Albury.
The itinerary shown is only a sample. The actual routing will vary to take into account weather and local may include either Mt Bogong or the Fainter Range.
