ABOUT THE RIDING

Style of Riding: English..

Type of Riding: Trail ride. The ride is mainly walking and trotting due to the mountainous terrain. When the going permits there are canters. Guests are expected to lead their horses into and out of camp each day and to dismount and walk their horses over particularly rugged sections

Type of Tack: Australian stock saddles.

Hours in the Saddle: 4 to 8 hours per day.

Riding Ability Required: Novice upwards.

Maximum Weight: 110 kgs (17st)

Number of Guides per Ride: 1.

Minimum/Maximum number of riders in group: 1/10

Looking after the horse: Guests are expected to groom and tack up their own horses. You are not expected to feed them but your help is appreciated.

ABOUT THE HORSES

The herd of 38 are mainly station bred, TB x Clydesdale, strong, bold hunter types, the traditional hack favored by New Zealand stockmen and women. There are also a few station bred horses that have come from the North Island's East Coast hill country These are rugged types of all colours with a good attitude to work and well known for their jumping ability. Here are some of the horses you might meet.

Breeze - Connemara X, 15hh, grey. Breeze is a nice quiet ladies horse.

Porgi - Clydesdale X, 16.3hh, black. A handsome, quiet, gentleman's horse.

Sandy - Clydesdale X, 16hh, light bay with a white blaze and two white socks. Suitable for less experienced riders.New Zealand Hurunui Horse Treks

Red - Gisborne stationbred, 151hh chestnut. A nice, well mannered horse Gisborne is ideal for less experienced ladies.

Jam - Fresian X, 16hh, black with white star and two white hind socks. Beautiful temperment, ideal ladies horse.

Micky - Quaterhorse X, 16.2hh, dun. Suitable for both men and women.

Finnigan - Irish Hunter, 15.2hh lovely nature suitable for both men and women
