What to Pack

Ireland has a a similar climate to the UK so be prepared for all sorts of weather, including rain. Layers are ideal and make sure you pack waterprooofs.

Everything you take has to fit into your saddlebags. These are not absolutely watertight and therefore you should pack two or three items together in a plastic bag or bin liner. Even in heavy downpours the clothes will then remain dry. It is important to pack the bags as evenly as possible so that they do not move about in all directions.

  • Jodhpurs or long trousers.
  • Short riding boots or ride/walk boots such as Ariat Terrain or rubber riding boots.
  • Half chaps
  • Long sleeved shirt and/or T shirts,
  • Warm clothing/Fleece.
  • Underwear. Thermal underwear is good, as you can get extra warmth without taking up too much space. Cycling shorts are good for long days in the saddle.
  • Waterproof/windproof jacket and trousers.
  • Casual clothes for evening.
  • Trainers or comfortable shoes for evening.
  • Head torch
  • Personal toiletries.
  • Sun block.
  • Lip balm.
  • Camera, film and batteries but remember space is very limited.

Riding hats are not mandatory. However, we strongly recommend that you always ride in a hat and that it conforms to BHS requirements (PAS015, BSEN1384). Riding without a hat could effect a claim on insurance.
