The Horses & the Riding

USA

ABOUT THE RIDING

Style of Riding: Western - the horses are schooled to neck rein.

Type of Riding: Ranch Holiday/Centre-Based - The "ranch horse experience" is central at WTR. The riding program is lead by certified American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA) instructors. This structured approach is well suited to all abilities, whether you are a timid beginner or an experienced rider. Rides are tailored to suit the guest's requirements and can include fast work. Some walking, as the terrain is mountainous however there are plenty of open meadows for good gallops. Cattle work requires use of all paces including sharp turns on the haunches and forehand.

Type of Tack: Western.

Hours in the Saddle: Half day rides are 2 to 4 hours. Full day rides are 5 to 6 hours with a stop made for a picnic lunch. Cattle drives can be up to 7 hours per day.

Riding Ability Required: Beginner upward. All levels of riders are welcome and families are particularly welcome between June and August. You must be able to mount unaided, as there are some day rides where mounting blocks are not available. Adult rides are divided according to experience, ability, and objective. All groups have the opportunity for half-day and spectacular all-day trail rides. Regardless of your level of skill, you will have the opportunity to learn more, whether it's your first trotting or cantering lesson or learning to trot or lope without a bridle! Wilderness Trails Ranch has lots of horses and will match you to the right horse for your riding ability. More experienced riders (intermediate upward) are welcome at anytime and during the month of September can participate in cattle drives.
